正鏢手永龍叔(上圖橘衣)好久不見，有他參與鏢旗魚的戰力大有提昇

我想今天是不可思議的一天
因為在早上九點前，我們就將三支衛星標給放送出去了
也就是說，我們鏢了三尾旗魚，分別為：

白肉旗魚 (black marlin) - 130kg
白肉旗魚 (black marlin) - 90kg
黑皮旗魚 (blue marlin) - 150kg

we tagged 3 marlins in the front nine

大家在船上開心的不得了，這麼早就將標放完，這還真的是頭一回
心想可以提早收工回家休息，太棒了！

海哥來電，說要將他們船上的衛星標調一隻給我們
這樣的戲碼前幾天的標識放流才上演過(20110221)

21日永福船長一日標了四尾旗魚，目前平記錄只有乙尾
船員接到衛星標之後，馬上裝上，我們繼續在大海上找尋旗魚的蹤跡

就在十點三十三分，我們發現了一尾重約210kg的黑皮旗魚
並且，順利的完成標識，平了永福叔的記錄，大家開心的不得了

這是當天第二次上演兩艘鏢船傳接衛星標的戲碼
一路的順遂，船長及船員都相當的開心
但永福叔與大海上其它鏢船，就沒有我們這麼幸運

過了中午，我想大家都放棄了
因為流水漸緩，船長覺得出現旗魚的機率並不高

就在一點多，一尾重約240公斤的黑皮旗魚，在船架的左邊從海下直衝而上
大家那準備回家的心情突然間全被嚇了一跳
因為從未見過旗魚竟然以「歡迎光臨」的姿態，自己送上門來

We found a big blue marlin about 240kgs close to 1 p.m. And tagged twice before shooting it. Today is a lucky day because we tagged 5 marlins.


這旗魚好大一隻，而且離船頭僅二公尺左右
鏢手永龍馬上衝上船架舉起鏢竿，二齒叔加足了馬力追了過去
第一次鏢射…失敗，船長失望的自覺痛失了大好機會
沒想到該尾旗魚又給了我們第二次的機會，第二次成功的完成標識，大家開心的手舞足蹈

一天五尾旗魚，真的是不可思議
在這漁獲量年年下降的時代有這種成績，真的是非常的不容易

早上五點半搭乘由二齒叔所駕駛的「吉福」出海作業
船上的成員包括我一共五位，天氣雖然陰沉，但總比下著雨來得好

我們的工作就是找到旗魚，且順利的將二齒鏢上的衛星置入於旗魚背部
當然我只能幫忙找魚及握著相機作記錄，將20萬的衛星標識在旗魚背部的專業工作
全都得依賴海上男兒，正鏢手、比魚仔及舵手的團隊配合

早上十一點四十七分，我們追逐著黑皮旗魚
這是當日第三度發現旗魚，數次的與浪起舞後，還是沒辦法順利的完成標識作業
當天，就抱著數尾的鬼頭刀、三點仔、黃鰭鮪、鰹魚回家

然而，由陳永福船長所率領的龍漁發團隊
當日則是打破了我們歷年來的放標記錄，一天內就放了三支衛星標出去

而照片上的這尾旗魚，則是因為在來不及裝衛星的情況下
只好先用傳統三齒標將旗魚拿下，這尾旗魚重達119公斤

魚累了，漁民才能順利的用魚勾將旗魚勾上船板

這是一尾黑皮旗魚
魚捉上船後，船員便會拿刀切劃開魚腹，將其胃內含物擠出來
因為胃部的食物會發臭，所以得處理掉

今日永福叔一共捉得四尾旗魚，分別為一紅一白二黑
紅肉旗魚、白肉旗魚與黑皮旗魚，這年頭魚少，能有這種戰蹟相當難得

最後附上出海難得的近拍寫真
因為「龍漁發」的衛星標用完了，所以向「吉福」調一支衛星標來使用
船員將衛星標放在網子上，以接力的方式拿取，這還是第一次碰到這種情況

最後，船上拿相機的就是我，真是難得有我的畫面
朋友說我站的很穩，事實上我另一隻手抱著柱子呢！(搖)

一如往常，一早四點半就從成功出發到石梯港，再由石梯港出發展開找旗魚行動
大陸強烈冷氣團來台，人還沒上船出港，身体和頭就覺得特別冷

上午十點十四分，海上除了零星的飛魚之外
唯一見到的就是為數不少的海豚，因其特徵，漁民都稱牠們為「和尚」

船上含我與馬修，一共六個人
因為今天浪並不大，所以第一次嘗試上船架拍照
沒扶東西拍照還挺恐怖的，因為身体上下左右晃來晃去，非常的沒有安全感

五人便都擠在鏢船「二樓」的位置，一整天的工作就是待在那找旗魚
有人常問我出海好不好玩，基本上我答案都是：「不好玩，但…很難得」
站在那又搖又撞要站要暈，又冷又凍眼睛吹風十幾個小時
有時候烈日海面折射更是難受，怎麼會是好玩

站在這位子的是比魚仔(指揮魚的位置給舵手)
除非親眼看到，身体實際感受到那種船與大海撞擊的威力，怎能不打從心底的配服

有時候船架還會從上往下高速插進水中，或像湯匙餚湯一樣將來浪掘起
船架與大海擊出美麗但不適合拿相機時欣賞的浪花，浪花如潑水般的迎向每位船員
船員避不可避的用手遮住臉部的海水，然後不久雨衣變開始生產一粒粒細小的鹽巴

雖然連續摃龜四次沒找到魚，但每一次出海都是學習
跟馬修說「learning is endless」，endless是無窮、漫長、廣大無邊
翻成中文就是大家熟悉的「學無止盡」，馬修看著我對我說中文「對」

沒魚的時候你要學習忍耐與等待
有小魚上勾時還得懂得犧牲、奉獻、感謝與分享
就如上圖船長在處理上勾的小鬼頭刀，就因為牠的犧牲，我們船上六個人飽餐一頓

有時候想想在船上吃這份中餐真是幸福
這種感覺實在是很難去分享給大家，因為這料理得在船上吃才有那種感受
因為當你又冷又餓時，突然有一碗熱魚湯暖胃，真可稱上人間美味
期待下回能有更好的運氣，再摃龜下去就破上回連摃的紀錄了。

清晨特別冷，一早在外海就領悟到了一句話：「早餐吃的早，吐也吐的早」

12月03日，一共發現二次白肉旗魚及一次一百多公斤的鯊魚
但可惜的是海色很差，魚常常一溜煙的就不見了

當天的浪報十級，十級的浪就不得不穿上雨衣
因為船身與海浪打擊出來的浪花，常常迎面而來

裝有衛星標的鏢竿發射，可惜…失敗了
左鏢手未能即時補上一發，也相當的可惜

重新搜尋魚跡…
沒射中的話，一次少賺大概都是上萬元不等，好的話可能是十來萬元

下午最後一波攻擊，鏢手永龍從非常遠約200尺的位置發現了旗魚
船開至旗魚的所在點後，便開始與旗魚展開一路的大海追逐戰

船身右方友船 - 「協吉號」也參與進攻
雖然旗魚有游進他們的攻擊範圍，但鏢手仍然無法鎖定出鏢

就這麼一路追逐了十幾分鐘
船長說，這尾旗魚游的相當快，很難出鏢

接著船身左處，永福叔所駕駛的「龍漁發」也參與進攻
三台船追一尾旗魚，拼了十幾分鐘，最終還是沒人能出鏢…嘆！好可惜

回到石梯港，全身又冷又累又餓又暈
港內開始下起雨，是該起程回家了

December 3^rd, 2010; Again the team went north, travelling with the Harpoon fishing fleet has brought interest and delight of local fishermen. Joining the crew on board we have been able to share the excitement about harpooning marlin. Advice is passed about appropriate weather condition and how to prepare ourselves for a day on the ocean. Warm breakfast also ensures energy for the day. The wind in Chenggong was howling throughout the previous night. Prepared for waves and rain, we climbed aboard. Preparing the modified harpoon with our tags the boats left the harbor at sun-up.

The caudal fin for marlin is distinctive. As a fish recuperates after deep diving or, possibly, just enjoying the sun’s warming light, marlin come to the surface for brief periods. This is the opportunity harpooners are looking for; a slender, ribbed fin extended above the surface of the water. Amidst the whitecaps and waves it is exceedingly difficult to spot, however each vessel has four men plus the captain continuously scanning the surrounding water for a glimpse of the fin. Today, one crew is stationed on the bow, as the swell is greater than 3m, sometimes he is almost level with elevated viewing deck and then, as the wave passes, he is plummeted down as if to disappear under water. The waves spray and the occasional rain means we all get wet. So thankful for adequate wet weather gear!

Spotting a fin, a cry goes out, “There, there, there!!!” The engine is revved up, a cloud of diesel smoke bellows and the chase is on! The visible fin disappears and reappears as the fish seemingly evades the boat. The captain quickly assumes his position at the bow, harpoon in hand. His first mate, the left harpooner, picks up his harpoon and a third crew, the director, join them on the bow. A skilled driver positions the boat at the hand signals and further calls for the prized fish. Working together as a team, the highly maneuverable water craft follows the twisting and turning of the fish. A lure is thrown by the captain, timing the ascent of the marlin to the bait with his harpoon, a successful tag will pierce the marlin’s body. Two anchors secure themselves between the fin and a vertebra, fastening the tag and the harpoon pole is extracted.

Two marlins were chased to no avail; a shortfin mako (Isurus carcharias) was also seen and pursued however this two failed to produce a successful tagging episode. Returning to port the crew were hopeful for another day fishing, we returned to Chenggong in the car, exhausted.

11月27日，凌晨三點半起床準備好攝影器材，四點集合從成功開車往石梯港前進

這個季氣，有許多鏢船都會停泊在大港口那，主要是因為離魚區較近

因為石梯港沒有拍賣漁市
所以，漁獲的部份船長則會租用(或與他人合資) 九人座車或小發財車，將魚載至新港漁市拍賣

登船第一件事，就是先把衛星標裝置於鏢竿
鏢竿上，黑色貼有黃色膠帶該枚就是衛星標，裝置後會將黃色膠帶撕下取出磁鐵
外部磁鐵一取下，衛星標則會啟動

Matthew與我同一艘船，Riyar與信志在另一艘
吃早餐是必要的，而馬修因為吃太多白飯弄壞了肚子，之後告訴我…他五度想拉大便，最後還是拉了
因為我們都是斯文人，所以想拉大便的代號都是「make cake (作蛋糕)」

出港沒多久就發現這台破損的小舟
船長說下面會「藏魚」，因此在這附近不停的繞啊繞

果真，下面藏了不少鬼頭刀
沒幾分鐘的時間，連續拉了十來尾大小不依的鬼頭刀

接著，又利用捉到的鰹魚，把他切成小鬼
將肉塊勾著，漁民就集体開始表演手釣鯊魚

就這樣拉來拉去，也拉了七、八尾的小鯊魚上來
最後，船長說，大家(其它船隻)都在「看」旗魚，意旨該辦正事了

發現了一尾旗魚，但可惜沒有鏢中
正標手 - 永龍說：「好可惜，該尾約一百多公斤，很肥」

鏢旗魚是用三齒鏢勾，而標識放流的鏢勾為二齒
所以在手感與難度上，也是有差異的

因為連續幾天沒風勢，所以船長決定把船先開回新港休息

Saturday November 27, 2010, our tagging trip had already been delayed one day due to rough weather however Riyar, Mr. Hsu, Xin Zja, James and Matthew set out at 4 am to travel 60km north to meet the Harpoon fleet. During this time of year the fleet traditional migrate north in search of Black Marlin. The interest of International Scientific Council for Tuna and Tuna like Species has provided 30 Archival Satellite Tags investigating marlin and sailfish movement in the North-Western Pacific. The added expertise of local fishing captain, Yung Fu has enhanced global appreciation of this species. The scientific study is set out to gain as much information into the routes these large pelagic predators take during annual movement.

In Taitung it is apparent the fish move northward with the Kuroshiro current. The value of having more and more tracks and data from the fish’s behavior allows scientists to create a better understanding of animals living in the ocean. Scientists look for patterns in the movement to gather species characteristics’, such as hunting during the day or diving to deeper depths at night. More tags creates more individuals for comparison, do the adult fish visit the same places the younger fish go, are the younger fish staying in different areas longer? The results begin to influence fishing and sustainability decisions. Therefore, the more evidence that the fish behave in a particular manner, the more scientists can estimate the effects of climate change, the effects of overfishing or the effects of protection and conservation.

Meeting Yung Fu and his brother-in-law, we ate breakfast, carefully prepared the harpoon with our tags and waited the 10 or so minutes for the sun to rise.

At dawn we set out through the harbor to what was appearing to be a fantastic day.

After 2 hours of patrolling the near shore waters, an upturned row boat provided focused fishing. Fish form an association with objects floating in the water. This means that when a drifting tree or boat has been in the water some time, fish will remain close to it. Unsure of the reason, fishermen have used this fish behavior to their advantage. Today, we found the dolphinfish were attracted to the lures towed behind the boat. After circling the upturned boat several times we caught approximately 20 fish. Another fishing technique was used to capture the juvenile sharks that also remained close to the upturned boat. Larger hooks baited with fresh fish were used to capture 7 sandbar sharks (Carcharhinus plumbeus).

Unfortunately the weather was too kind, having had days of large wind and swell, today’s relatively clear sky with minimal wind meant marlin were hard to find. The fleet of harpoon vessels travelled south, passing SanSianTai from the water, we arrived in Shingang port, Chenggong mid afternoon with stories to discuss, “the one that got away.”

說著：「晚上流刺網掃過後，還捉什麼魚，哪來的魚？」(道地的綠島口音)
聽完噗嗤的笑一聲，但也感嘆大環境之下的無奈

當日雖然看到數次的魚跡，但雨傘旗魚都非常難以靠近
船身一過去，魚就下潛不見蹤影，我想…
如果每隻旗魚都不浮上來，那鏢船怎辦？全改行去放緄(延繩)好了

好幾次都晒傷，這次算是有所準備
不過墨鏡不夠黑，回家眼球還是佈滿血絲
加上連續兩天的出海，第三天眼球真的撐不住了

頭頂的太陽加上海面的折射，真的很晒人
公司的歪果人-馬修，第一天就被晒到晚餐傳簡訊跟我說：

Please don't wait
I had too much sun,dinner would be a big effort.

譯：俺今天晒傷了，晚餐對我來說太「硬斗」

重點在於安全帽上頭有裝設攝影機，透過MINI魚眼攝影機，可以得到更棒的視野角度

左邊是酸菜雞肉，右邊是秋刀魚，中餐吃粥，我吃了兩碗，大滿意
盛芳船長真的有好手藝

下午近兩點，拍得「富裕號」標得一百七十幾公斤的黑皮旗魚
當日拍賣價格好像二百多塊的樣子，鏢黑皮一尾，勝得標到破雨傘十幾尾

最後，當日還是找不到白肉旗魚
這種時節，找白肉旗魚還要鏢中，真的有困難

Objective: tag Blue Marlin, Makaira mazara, with Microwave Telemetry X-tag;

Two harpoon fishing vessel’s left Shinkang Fishing Harbor with six
experienced local fishermen, four from Dr. Chiang’s Billfish Tagging crew
and Mr. Hsu, visiting researcher and fisher facilitator. Captain Yung Fu’s
vessel leads the way to traditional fishing grounds for the Sailfish near shore
harpoon fishery. The harpoon method has been instructed and adopted from
Japan. Findings from tagging research are showing that Sailfish and Marlins
migrate annually from the seasonal temperate waters in the higher latitudes to
warmer waters near Eastern Taiwan for spawning. Electronic tagging is also
providing conclusive descriptions of speed, distance and diving capabilities
of these hunted ocean predators. The tagging crew comes equipped with a
range of telescopic and real time image recorders. James had a new Cannon
camera with which to familiarize, and I had a small water resistant, helmet
mounted, video recorder to follow crew capturing action from the bowsprint.
The day had favorable winds coming from the north, mid-morning saw
wave height increase and the appearance of white horses on the wave
crests. Sailfish sightings were infrequent. Our first sighting came at 9.16am.
Capt. Yung Fu harpooned a sailfish (LJFL ~ 170cm) displaying the species
associated decorative dorsal fin. The vivid blue dots and shimmer of the sail is
so difficult to capture on film.
Late morning, a Striped Marlin, Tetrapurus audax, was chased but to no avail.
This would have been a suitable substitute to the intended recipient of the X-
tag.
Mr. Hsu formed reputable bonds with the local fishers, conversation revealing
further insight into harpooning origins and family genealogy. Mr. Hsu also
hosted the evening’s refreshment which was definitely appreciated.
The team set out the following day in an attempt to find the fish before
the weather proved too difficult. Trolling lures behind the boat drew a
catch with the small dolphinfish, Coryphaena hippurus, cooked for lunch.
